Generator Care

Generators, like most mechanical machines, are meant to be used frequently. If you have a generator that has been stored for a long time, and it is not being started and ran periodically, chances are it may need repair. Running your portable generator periodically is one of the best things you can do to keep your generator  working properly.

Propane Portable Generator Installation

Most portable generators use gasoline for fuel. This fuel is readily available during normal times, but when there is an emergency that disrupts power, gasoline stations are not able to dispense their product. You may have a generator and not be able to use it because of lack of fuel.  

We recommend buying a dual fuel portable generator, and connect it to a propane cylinder for fuel, as oppose to using gasoline. In our shop, we currently hold a stock of portable propane generators that we can sell to you. We also provide the electrical installation, and the propane gas installation.

Liquid propane, or LPG, how is commonly known, is the preferred fuel for portable generators. This fuel never spoils and never expires, you can have it inside your tank for twenty years, and when you are ready to use it, it has the same capabilities as when you first put it in the tank.

We recommend installing a 100 gallon cylinder at your home, but if you need more fuel autonomy, we can install a 500 gallon tank, and place it underground. 

Gasoline that stays a long time inside a fuel time deteriorates. Often there are sediments and other deposits that form within the tank which can be passed to the carburetor and cause it to malfunction or break down. Because most portable generators are not in use everyday, their fuel tanks may contain contaminated and stale fuel.  

Here are some issues related to gasoline generators that may be of interest to you:

1. Gasoline is not generally available when there is a widespread power failure.
2. Carburetors and its internal components often gum up or corrode due to decomposing fuel inside generator tanks
3. It is a hazard to store large amounts of gasoline in your garage or other parts of your property.
4. Gasoline is more expensive than propane
5. Generators running on gasoline require more maintenance.
6. It is inconvenient and dangerous to refuel generators with gasoline during emergencies, especially at night.

Tips For Extending Service Life: Portable Generator Repair

1. Start and run your generator frequently, at least once every two months.
2. Change your oil, oil filter and air filter on your generator at least once every 100 hours of service.
3. Change air filter at least once every 200 hours of service, more often if used in dusty environments
4. Store your portable generator in a dry place
5. Use generator at no more than 75% of rated capacity
6. Turn off generator by closing its fuel supply while running. This allows it to burn all fuel in the fuel line and the carburetor reservoir, keeping free of fuel residue. 
7. Perform a professional tune up at least once every two years

There is a $99.00 charge for pick up and delivery unless you can bring your generator to our shop.
